These systems are commonly based on belief as opposed to science. In some cases alternative practices are adopted by conventional systems and therefore lose their “alternative†classification. However, these alternatives are generally used in place of conventional methods.
Alternative medicines are used along with conventional medicine. Some examples are aromatherapy and art therapy. Biofeedback, dream analysis, and light therapy are also likely to be found in this category.
The four major divisions of complementary and alternative medicine practices are:
• Whole medical systems which are built completely on theory and practice. Examples of these are traditional Chinese medicine, Ayuneda, naturopathic and homeopathic medicine.
• Mind-body medicine which uses a variety of techniques to stimulate the mind and enhance its capabilities in association with the body’s symptoms and functions. Examples of this are likely to be prayer, meditation, and cognitive therapy.
• Biologically based practices are likely to use substances found in nature which provide the body with needed minerals and vitamins. Examples of this are dietary supplements and herbal products.
• Manipulative and body-based practices which emphasize movement in one or more parts of the body. Examples are massage and chiropractic.
One benefit to these types of treatments is that they are most likely to be economical. With the rising costs of pharmaceutical and conventional treatment, costs are becoming more of a concern with many people. Of course cost is only secondary to your health so these decisions need to be made wisely.
Another benefit is that many have a potential for relieving the effects of stress involved in many peoples’ lives. Stress can be very damaging to your health especially if you already have difficulties associated with illness. Biological therapies are extremely beneficial when used wisely. The body can benefit greatly from the proper balance of vitamins and minerals.
Many illnesses are enhanced by a lack of a natural substance which for some reason our body has failed to supply (perhaps poor diet). Supplements give us a useful solution to this problem. Perhaps the most beneficial form of complementary/alternative treatment is mind, body, and spiritual practices. We depend on our minds for every function we make each minute of the day. An unhealthy mind restricts healthy performance. These types of practices help us to utilize our body and spirit to benefit our mind. They promote productive coping and healing mechanisms essential to our wellbeing.
